Core architecture and on-chip memory
The LM3S1538-IQC50-A2: The Cortex-M3 core delivers deterministic interrupt handling with a single-cycle multiply and hardware divide, making it suited for real-time control loops and sensor fusion tasks. Program memory is 96 KB of on-chip flash, backed by 64 KB of SRAM (organized as 64K x 8). This memory split provides enough headroom for a moderate firmware image plus a data buffer for logging or communication stacks without external memory.
The device integrates a 10-bit ADC with 8 channels, along with PWM, watchdog timer, and brown-out detect/reset. For serial communication it supports I²C, SPI, SSI, UART/USART, IrDA, Microwire, and a quadrature encoder interface (QEI). This set covers most sensor and actuator links in a typical embedded control board.
Lifecycle reality for procurement
Texas Instruments lists the LM3S1538-IQC50-A2 as NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs). This means the part is still available for existing production but is not intended for new design starts.
