16V boost regulator for LED backlight strings
The Texas Instruments LM3500TL-16/NOPB is a DC-DC step-up (boost) regulator designed specifically for backlight applications, delivering a regulated 16V output from a 2.7V to 7V input supply.
1MHz switching and 400mA switch — inductor and LED string sizing
The 1MHz switching frequency lets the designer use a 4.7µH to 10µH inductor in a small 0805 or 1210 footprint, keeping the total solution height under 1.2 mm for slim panel assemblies. The 400mA switch current rating sets the maximum LED string current — for a typical 3-LED white string at 20 mA per LED, the switch sees roughly 80 mA peak, leaving ample headroom. Above 300 mA total LED current, the inductor saturation rating and PCB copper pour for the switch node need attention.
Housed in an 8-bump wafer-level chip-scale package (8-DSBGA, also designated 8-WFBGA), this part has no leads — the solder balls are the only connection. The 0.50 mm ball pitch demands a solder-mask-defined pad with a 0.30 mm opening and a 0.35 mm copper pad. Rework requires a hot-air station with a fine nozzle; hand-soldering is not practical.
