Supply Chain & Allocation Reality:

The LM337 is the negative half of every split supply built since the 1970s - the mirror of the LM317 across the ground rail, with the same 1.25V reference, the same two-resistor adjustment and the same grade ladder (L for 100mA in TO-92, M for 500mA, the plain part at 1.5A). The trap is written into the metal: on the TO-220 bodies the LM337 and LM317 do not share a pin orientation - the input and output land on exchanged pins, because the tab follows the input on the negative part and the output on the positive one. Every substitution in this family is safe electrically and dangerous mechanically, and the split-supply repair that "works except the negative rail is dead" usually put a correct part in the wrong orientation.

The 100mA Grade for Bias Rails

Shenzhen Spot Stock (24-48h Dispatch)

Electrical & Core Specs:

The TO-92 member: 100mA class against the TO-220 parts 1.5A, same 1.25V reference and adjustment topology in mirror.

Negative rails of -1.25V to -37V class set by the divider; the small body limits dissipation.

Compatibility & Drop-In Notes: The grade ladder repeats the positive side exactly: L for 100mA, M for 500mA, the base part for 1.5A, and LM333 for 3A where the negative rail needs muscle. Match the current, then the package, then the orientation - in that order.
Package & Solder Footprint: TO-92 / SO-8 bodies; the orientation rules of the specific package govern.
Shenzhen Warehouse Stock & MOQ: Stocked as the bias-rail part of op-amp and audio repair.

The 500mA Middle Rung

Shenzhen Spot Stock (24-48h Dispatch)

Electrical & Core Specs:

The medium grade: 500mA class in the TO-220 body - the same die scaled between the L and the full part.

Same adjustment range; the grade is the current ceiling.

Compatibility & Drop-In Notes: Grade-for-grade matching with the positive rail is good split-supply practice: a 500mA positive rail with a 1.5A negative part is fine margin; the reverse wastes the asymmetry at the first balanced load.
Package & Solder Footprint: TO-220 with the negative-family pin order.
Shenzhen Warehouse Stock & MOQ: Stocked; verify the marking, not the silhouette - the two families look identical in the drawer.

The Negative Rail at 3A

Shenzhen Spot Stock (24-48h Dispatch)

Electrical & Core Specs:

The higher-current negative member: 3A class for rails that outgrew the LM337 - the negative counterpart of the LM350 tier on the positive side.

Same adjustment concept with its own envelope per datasheet.

Compatibility & Drop-In Notes: The substitution arithmetic of the family: current direction is up (never down without the load budget), package stays TO-220-family with the negative-family orientation, and the divider math stays the same.
Package & Solder Footprint: Verify the pin drawing - the higher-current members keep the negative-family order but not always the same tab.
Shenzhen Warehouse Stock & MOQ: Stocked for power-grade split-supply repair.
Buyer & Quality Checklist for Sourcing Alternatives
  • The mirror is in the pins: LM337 TO-220 is ADJ / VIN (tab) / VOUT against the LM317s ADJ / VOUT / VIN - the input and output exchange places. Same-looking body, opposite wiring; check the drawing every time, in both directions.
  • The grades follow the positive side exactly: LM337L 100mA, LM337M 500mA, base 1.5A, LM333 3A - and the temperature prefixes L/M mirror the positive family too.
  • The 1.25V reference cannot reach ground: the negative rail bottoms at about -1.25V without a positive bias below it, exactly as the LM317 cannot reach zero. Rails that must touch 0V need a different topology.
  • The adjustment pin wants its bypass and the output wants its capacitor per the datasheet figures: negative regulators are less forgiving of the output-cap ESR games than their modern LDO cousins.
  • In split-supply repair, the negative rail dying alone while the positive works is this family's signature fault - and the two most common causes are orientation (the mirror) and a divider that opened. Meter both before condemning the part.
  • When the positive rail used an SOT-223 clone and the negative rail is a TO-220 original, note the thermal asymmetry: the negative side is where the heat goes in most rebuilds.
Frequently Asked Technical Questions

Q: Can LM337 and LM317 share a footprint?

A: No - their TO-220 pin orders differ: LM337 is ADJ / VIN / VOUT and LM317 is ADJ / VOUT / VIN, with the tab following input and output respectively. Electrically they are complements; mechanically they must never be swapped by silhouette.

Q: What are the current grades of the LM337 family?

A: LM337L is 100mA (TO-92 or SO-8), LM337M is 500mA, the plain LM337 is 1.5A in TO-220, and the LM333 extends the negative side to 3A - the same ladder as the positive LM317 line.

Q: Why is my negative rail stuck near -1.2V?

A: The 1.25V reference floor: without a bias path below it, the LM337 cannot regulate lower in magnitude than its reference. Rails that need to reach 0V must leave this family.
