Supply range and output flexibility
The LM311H/NOPB: This general-purpose comparator runs from a single 5 V to 36 V supply, or from dual ±2.5 V to ±18 V rails — covering common industrial and instrumentation bus voltages without a secondary regulator. The output stage supports DTL, TTL, RTL, MOS, open-collector, and open-emitter configurations, so it interfaces directly with 5 V logic, higher-voltage relays, or discrete transistor loads without a level translator.
TO-99 metal can — through-hole fit
Housed in a TO-99-8 metal can, the LM311H/NOPB is a through-hole device suited for socketed or soldered assemblies where hermetic sealing or mechanical robustness is preferred over surface-mount density. The metal can provides better thermal conduction than plastic DIPs and shields the die from ambient light and RF interference — relevant for comparator circuits near switching power stages or in high-vibration environments.
Input offset and bias — threshold accuracy
For a 10 kΩ source impedance, the bias current contributes 2.5 mV of additional offset — enough to shift a 50 mV threshold by 5 %, so the source impedance matters in precision threshold designs. Quiescent current maxes at 7.5 mA, making this comparator suitable for always-on monitoring circuits where the power budget allows a few milliamps per channel.
