1A output — thermal reality check
At 1A output, with a typical dropout of 2V or more, the TO-39 metal can will dissipate significant heat. The part includes over-temperature protection, but sustained full-load operation without a heatsink is unlikely at the upper end of the 0°C to 125°C junction range. Plan for a clip-on or bolt-on heatsink if your load draws close to 1A continuously. The quiescent current is 5.2 mA typical, max 10 mA — negligible in most designs, but worth budgeting in battery-powered gear.
Active production — no LTB risk
The LM309H/NOPB is listed as Active on the manufacturer's lifecycle status. ROHS3 compliant. For a classic linear regulator in a hermetic package, that is a solid sourcing position — no need to chase surplus or worry about an imminent EOL.
