The Texas Instruments LM2940T-8.0 is a positive fixed-output low-dropout regulator delivering 8 V at up to 1 A from a maximum input of 26 V.
Dropout headroom and thermal budget at 1 A
Maximum dropout is 1 V at 1 A output, meaning the input rail must stay above 9 V to maintain regulation under full load. At 1 A with 1 V dropout the part dissipates 1 W minimum in the TO-220 — adequate with basic airflow or a small heatsink, but the thermal resistance junction-to-ambient (not listed here) should be checked against the enclosure's airflow for sustained operation. Quiescent current is 10 mA typical, rising to 15 mA max at the supply pin — a consideration for always-on battery-backed rails where every milliamp counts.
Protection features and output configuration
The single regulator includes over-current, over-temperature, reverse polarity, and short-circuit protection — a full set for a rugged point-of-load rail. Output is fixed at 8 V with positive configuration, so no external resistor divider is needed. The TO-220-3 package (three leads, tab is output) is a standard footprint for through-hole assembly and rework.
