1A fixed 5V rail — the dropout headroom decision
The LM2940T-5.0/LF08 is a fixed 5V low-dropout regulator from the LM2940 family, delivering 1A continuous output. The 1V maximum dropout at full load means the input rail must stay above 6V to maintain regulation — a 5.5V input would leave only 0.5V headroom, which is inside the dropout region. For a 5V logic or sensor supply derived from a 7.5V to 12V intermediate bus, this part fits cleanly without the thermal penalty of a standard 78xx linear.
Protection suite and quiescent budget
On-chip protection covers over-current, over-temperature, reverse polarity, and short-circuit — no external clamp diode needed for reverse-battery scenarios common in automotive or battery-backed rails. PSRR is 64 dB at 120 Hz, which attenuates full-wave rectifier ripple by a factor of roughly 1600 — adequate for clean analog supplies in sensor or audio front-ends, though higher-frequency rejection drops off above a few kHz.
