Fixed 12V rail for sensitive loads
The LM2940IMP-12/NOPB is a fixed 12V output LDO regulator from Texas Instruments, delivering up to 1A continuous current in a SOT-223-4 surface-mount package. Its 66dB PSRR at 120Hz makes it a strong candidate for post-regulating a switching supply that feeds an analog or RF rail where ripple at the fundamental switching frequency must be suppressed.
Dropout headroom and thermal budget
Maximum dropout voltage is 1V at 1A load, so the input must stay above 13V under full current to maintain regulation. The SOT-223-4 package's large tab conducts heat to the PCB copper plane; the effective RthJA depends on the board layout and copper area under the tab.
Protection set reduces external components
On-chip protection includes over-current, over-temperature, reverse polarity, and short-circuit. These features allow the regulator to survive output faults and reverse-battery conditions without additional clamp diodes or crowbar circuits, simplifying the BOM for a 12V rail in a power-distribution block.
