Fixed 10 V rail for industrial and automotive loads
The LM2937ET-10: The TO-220-3 through-hole package bolts into a heatsink or sits on a large copper island — the dropout is specified at 1 V max at 50 mA, so the input headroom needs to stay above 11 V to hold regulation. Built-in protection against over-temperature, reverse polarity, and short circuit means the regulator can survive a miswired field harness or a stalled fan load without external clamp diodes.
500 mA output — thermal budget in a TO-220
At 500 mA with a 12 V input dropping to 10 V output, the pass element dissipates 1 W. In still air the TO-220 junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is around 60 °C/W, so the die rises 60 °C above ambient — at 85 °C ambient the junction hits 145 °C, past the 125 °C rated maximum. That means a heatsink or forced airflow is non-negotiable at full load in a warm enclosure. The quiescent current sits at 2 mA typical, rising to 20 mA max under heavy load — not a concern for a 500 mA rail, but worth noting if the 10 V bus also powers the controller on the same regulator.
If the design can accommodate a different package or output voltage, a parametric search across the LM2937 family may turn up an active alternative, but no pin-compatible drop-in is listed.
