Fixed 5V rail for harsh environments
The LM2937ESX-5.0 is a fixed 5V positive-output LDO regulator from Texas Instruments, rated for 500 mA continuous output. The 1V maximum dropout at 50 mA means the input rail needs to stay above 6V to hold regulation; at full 500 mA load the dropout will be higher, so budget at least 1.5V headroom for a clean 5V bus.
Protection set: OTP, reverse polarity, short-circuit
On-chip protection includes over-temperature shutdown, reverse-polarity blocking, and short-circuit current limiting — three features that reduce external clamp diodes and fuses in a rugged supply design. Quiescent current is 2 mA typical, and the maximum supply current is 20 mA — the part does not shut down into micro-power sleep, so it is better suited to always-on linear rails than to battery-powered standby domains.
For a new-design BOM, look at TI's current-generation fixed 5V LDOs in the same TO-263 footprint — the LM2940 series or TPS7A47 family — but confirm pin compatibility and dropout voltage against your load current before substituting.
