Built-in protection saves external parts
Three protection features are integrated: over-temperature shutdown, reverse polarity blocking, and short-circuit current limiting. This means you can omit the usual Schottky diode on the input for reverse-battery protection and skip the PTC resettable fuse on the output — the regulator handles both internally. The quiescent current is 2 mA typical, rising to 20 mA max under full load, which is modest for a 500 mA LDO but worth noting if the rail is always-on in a battery-powered system.
It is in current manufacture by Texas Instruments, so there is no imminent obsolescence risk for ongoing designs.
Temperature range suits industrial and automotive environments
The DDPAK package has an exposed metal tab on the bottom (the tab is the output pin) — a good thermal via pattern under the tab pulls heat into the board copper, keeping the junction temperature within limits at full 500 mA output.
