The 1 V maximum dropout at 50 mA means the input must stay at least 1 V above 5 V to maintain regulation — a 6 V minimum input under load. This dropout characteristic suits systems with a moderately higher supply, such as a 12 V battery or 24 V industrial bus stepped down to 5 V.
Dropout and quiescent current — the BOM trade-offs
At 2 mA quiescent current (Iq), the LM2937ES-5.0/NOPB draws minimal overhead current from the input rail — important for battery-powered or always-on systems where every milliamp of standby current counts. The maximum supply current is 20 mA, covering the regulator's own consumption plus any fault conditions. The tab is the primary heat path.
Protection features reduce external components
Built-in over-temperature, reverse polarity, and short-circuit protection mean the LM2937ES-5.0/NOPB can survive a miswired input or a momentary output short without external clamp diodes or crowbar circuits. This simplifies the BOM and improves board-level reliability in field-service environments.
