12 V fixed output, 500 mA — the rail it feeds
The Texas Instruments LM2937ES-12 is a fixed 12 V output LDO regulator rated for 500 mA continuous output. It accepts up to 26 V input and drops 1 V maximum at full load, so the input rail must stay above 13 V to maintain regulation. Intended for powering analog supplies, relay coils, or sensor bias in automotive and industrial equipment where a clean 12 V bus is needed from a higher, unregulated source.
The 10 mA quiescent current is modest for a 500 mA part; it adds 120 mW of idle dissipation at 12 V, which the TO-263 tab can sink with a reasonable copper area.
Protection and package — what keeps it alive
Built-in protection includes over-temperature shutdown, short-circuit current limiting, and transient voltage clamping. The mirror-image insertion feature prevents damage if the part is installed backwards.
That means TI has announced end-of-life for this specific variant; final production orders have been taken, and remaining stock is what is available through distribution. For new designs, a pin-compatible 12 V LDO from the same or another manufacturer should be qualified.
