Input range and thermal envelope
The 8 V minimum input means it can run from a nominal 12 V rail with margin, while the 40 V maximum covers 24 V industrial buses and 12 V automotive systems during load-dump transients without an external clamp. At 3 A output, the power dissipation in the TO-220-7 package requires a heatsink for continuous operation above moderate ambient temperatures — the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of the bare package is roughly 50°C/W, so a 2 W loss pushes the junction 100°C above ambient.
