The LM2596T-ADJ is a 3 A step-down regulator from TI's SIMPLE SWITCHER® family, using a fixed 150 kHz switching frequency and an adjustable output from 1.2 V up to 37 V. The 3 A output current is the continuous rating — the inductor and catch diode must be sized for that peak, not the average load. At 150 kHz the magnetics are through-hole-friendly (larger cores, lower copper loss) but the fixed frequency means no sync capability; the noise spectrum is predictable and easy to filter. The input voltage range spans 4.5 V to 40 V. The output is adjustable via two external resistors — the 1.2 V reference sets the floor, and the 37 V ceiling is the highest regulated output before the dropout headroom disappears.
NRND — what the lifecycle status means for procurement
For existing BOM lines, the immediate concern is the last-time-buy window — NRND parts can transition to EOL with a short final-order period. The formed leads allow the device to be bolted to a heatsink without stressing the solder joints — common in power supplies, motor drives, and industrial control boards where the regulator dissipates several watts.
