Through-hole package and thermal reality

For 500 mA at a moderate Vin-Vout differential, the junction stays well within the -40°C to +125°C operating range, but at high differentials (say 48 V in to 3.3 V out) the power loss in the switch and catch diode will push the die temperature; a bit of airflow or a larger copper pad on the board side helps. The part is not synchronous — the external Schottky catch diode is your choice. That means you pick the diode for your output current and reverse voltage, which gives flexibility but adds a BOM line. The 150 kHz switching rate keeps the diode's reverse-recovery loss negligible.
