What the 60 V input and 500 mA output mean for your rail
The LM2594HVN-ADJ/NOPB is a SIMPLE SWITCHER® buck regulator from Texas Instruments, delivering up to 500 mA from a 4.5 V to 60 V input rail. That 60 V ceiling covers 48 V telecom buses, 24 V industrial supplies, and 12 V automotive systems with headroom for transients — the internal switch is rated for the full input range, so no external clamp is needed for load-dump events up to 60 V. The adjustable output spans 1.2 V to 57 V, set by a resistor divider. The 150 kHz switching frequency is low enough to keep inductor core losses modest but high enough to avoid audible noise in most loads — a 47 µH to 330 µH inductor in the standard SIMPLE SWITCHER design table will get you there.
Through-hole package and thermal reality
For 500 mA at a moderate Vin-Vout differential, the junction stays well within the -40°C to +125°C operating range, but at high differentials (say 48 V in to 3.3 V out) the power loss in the switch and catch diode will push the die temperature; a bit of airflow or a larger copper pad on the board side helps. The part is not synchronous — the external Schottky catch diode is your choice. That means you pick the diode for your output current and reverse voltage, which gives flexibility but adds a BOM line. The 150 kHz switching rate keeps the diode's reverse-recovery loss negligible.
