Fixed 12 V, 3 A buck — the workhorse regulator
The Texas Instruments LM2576T-12/LB03 is a SIMPLE SWITCHER® step-down buck regulator delivering a fixed 12 V output at up to 3 A from a 4 V to 40 V input rail. It uses a 52 kHz switching frequency and a simple external inductor-capacitor filter, keeping the BOM count low. The through-hole TO-220-5 formed-leads package makes it hand-solderable and easy to heatsink — a natural fit for benchtop supplies, industrial control boards, and motor-drive bias rails where a clean 12 V bus is needed.
3 A continuous — what the rating means for the load
The 3 A output rating is the continuous current the regulator can deliver at the fixed 12 V output. For a 12 V rail powering relays, fans, or a small logic supply, budget 2.4 A continuous to keep a 20 % derating margin for thermal headroom. The 52 kHz switching frequency is low enough to avoid AM-band interference but means the inductor will be physically larger than a 200 kHz+ part — plan for a 47 µH to 100 µH shielded inductor rated for the peak current.
This means TI is not actively promoting it for new projects, though it remains available for existing production runs through the independent distribution channel. For a new design, consider the pin-compatible LM2596 series as a drop-in alternative — both offer similar fixed 12 V output in the same TO-220-5 footprint.
The TO-220-5 package with a tab allows bolting to a chassis or heatsink — essential for keeping the junction below 125°C at full 3 A load.
