The Texas Instruments LM2576S-ADJ/NOPB is a SIMPLE SWITCHER series step-down (buck) regulator delivering up to 3 A continuous output from a 4 V to 40 V input rail. The adjustable output version sets the voltage anywhere from 1.23 V up to 37 V using two external resistors. Switching at 52 kHz, this part belongs to the first generation of easy-to-use monolithic switchers — the low frequency means larger magnetics but simpler layout and better noise immunity for industrial and automotive power rails.
What the 52 kHz switching rate means for your power stage
At 52 kHz, the inductor ripple current is higher than a modern 200 kHz+ switcher, so the output inductor needs a higher inductance value — typically 100 µH to 330 µH for a 3 A design. The trade-off is lower switching losses and less radiated EMI, which simplifies filtering in noise-sensitive environments like automotive ECUs or industrial PLCs. The 3 A output is continuous, not peak, so the inductor must be rated for at least 3 A DC plus the ripple current without saturating. The non-synchronous topology (no internal synchronous rectifier) means an external Schottky catch diode is required. The diode's forward voltage and thermal rating directly affect efficiency at high input voltages — a 3 A, 40 V Schottky in a D²Pak or similar surface-mount package is the standard pairing.
