Brushed DC motor driver with integrated control and power stage
The Texas Instruments DRV8816PWPR is a fully integrated brushed DC motor driver combining control logic and a DMOS power stage in a single 16-PowerTSSOP package. It drives a single brushed DC motor with a continuous output current of 2.8 A from an 8 V to 38 V supply rail. The parallel interface simplifies connection to a microcontroller or motion controller — no serial protocol overhead, just direct logic-level inputs to command the two half-bridge outputs. This makes it a straightforward drop-in for applications where the host already has spare GPIO.
What the 2.8 A output and 8-38 V supply mean for your BOM
The 2.8 A continuous output current is the driver's rated capacity at the half-bridge outputs — it sets the ceiling for the motor's stall or start-up current. For a brushed DC motor that draws 1.5 A under load, this driver provides margin without oversizing the PCB copper or heatsink. The 8 V to 38 V supply range covers common industrial and automotive rails: 12 V and 24 V systems are squarely inside the window, and the 38 V top end handles 36 V nominal supplies with headroom for transients. The same supply voltage powers both the logic and the motor load.
Temperature grade and package — board-fit for tight enclosures
Rated for -40°C to 190°C junction temperature, the DRV8816PWPR handles the thermal extremes of an unventilated cabinet or a motor-drive bay. The 16-HTSSOP supplier package includes an exposed thermal pad — the PCB layout must connect this pad to a copper plane for the junction-to-ambient thermal path to work. The exposed pad is on the bottom; the datasheet's recommended land pattern and via array should be followed to keep the junction temperature below the 190°C limit under full load.
