What the 2.5A and 33V ratings mean for your motor-drive BOM
The DRV8424PPWPR is a fully integrated motor driver from Texas Instruments that combines control logic and a Power MOSFET output stage in one 28-PowerTSSOP package. It drives one bipolar stepper motor or two brushed DC motors using a PWM interface, with each half-bridge rated for 2.5A continuous output and a load supply range of 4.5V to 33V. That 33V ceiling comfortably covers 24V nominal industrial rails with margin for transients, while the 2.5A per-channel rating supports medium-torque stepper applications and small brushed motors in consumer and industrial equipment.
Package and thermal: 28-PowerTSSOP with exposed pad
The 28-PowerTSSOP (4.40 mm width) uses an exposed thermal pad — the supplier device package is listed as 28-HTSSOP. For continuous 2.5A operation, the PCB layout must stitch the pad to a copper plane with multiple vias to keep junction temperature within the –40°C to 125°C operating range. The PowerTSSOP footprint is shared with other TI motor drivers in this family, so a layout designed for one can often accept the other with minor routing adjustments.
