What this 74HCT inverting buffer is for
The CD74HCT540M is a single-element octal inverting buffer/line driver from the 74HCT series, with 3-state outputs. It takes eight input signals, inverts them, and drives the outputs onto a bus — or holds them high-impedance when the output-enable is inactive.
Output drive and bus interface
The 3-state outputs let multiple devices share a common bus line; when the output-enable is deasserted, the output goes high-impedance and the bus floats to whatever the pull-up or terminator sets. The inverting logic means a low on the input gives a high on the bus, which matters if your backplane convention uses active-low enables or inverted address strobes.
Package, mounting, and shipping
The supplier device package is 20-SOIC. The wide-body SOIC footprint is standard; verify the land pattern against your assembly house's preferred 1.27 mm pitch layout.
