What this 74HCT multiplexer is and where it fits
The CD74HCT158E is a 4 x 2:1 multiplexer from the 74HCT series, built to route one of two 4-bit data sources to a single 4-bit output under a common select line. It runs on a single 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply and draws output drive rated at 4 mA source and 4 mA sink. The full military temperature range (-55°C to 125°C) makes it a fit for avionics, satellite, downhole, or any environment where the board sees extreme thermal cycling. The 16-pin DIP package is through-hole, so it reworks easily under a hot-air station or soldering iron — no risk of lifting a pad on a rework cycle.
Package and rework — through-hole DIP, no surprises
The 16-DIP (0.300", 7.62 mm) body is a standard footprint, with the supplier device package listed as 16-PDIP. Through-hole means you can hand-replace it without a preheater; just flux, a desoldering tool, and a clean iron. No MSL concerns — DIPs are moisture-insensitive and don't need bake before reflow if stored dry.
