What this decade counter does on the board
The Texas Instruments CD74HC4017M96 is a 10-bit Johnson decade counter from the 74HC family. It counts up on each clock pulse and provides one-of-ten decoded outputs, making it a direct replacement for the classic CD4017 in a surface-mount 16-SOIC package. The asynchronous reset pin (MR) clears the counter immediately, independent of the clock, which is useful for resetting a sequence on a fault or power-up condition.
35 MHz count rate and what it buys you
Rated for a count rate of 35 MHz, this part can divide clock frequencies up to that speed. In practice, that covers most microcontroller clock outputs, sensor pulse trains, and timing references in industrial or automotive systems.
It belongs in avionics, missile guidance, satellite, downhole drilling, or any environment where the board sees extreme cold or heat.
