The CD74HC393M96 is a dual 4-stage binary counter from TI's 74HC family, packing two independent 4-bit counters in a single 14-SOIC package. Each counter increments on the negative edge of its clock input — so if your system clock toggles on the rising edge, you'll need an inverter or a different trigger polarity. The asynchronous reset clears the counter immediately when the reset pin goes high, no clock required; this is handy for forcing a known state at power-up or after a fault condition without waiting for a clock edge. The 35 MHz count rate sets the maximum input clock frequency — above that the counter starts missing edges. For a typical 10-20 MHz digital bus or sensor readout, this is plenty; for a high-speed PLL feedback divider you'd want a faster logic family like 74AC or 74LVC.
The 14-SOIC package uses the standard SOIC-14 land pattern; it's easy to hand-solder or rework with a fine-tip iron, no hot-air station required.
