Programmable divide-by-N counter for frequency synthesis and timing chains
The CD4522BPW is a programmable BCD divide-by-N counter from the 4000B series, designed to divide an input clock frequency by any integer from 2 to 9. The division ratio is set by the BCD inputs, making it suitable for non-standard frequency division in timing chains, frequency synthesizers, and industrial sequencers. With an 8 MHz count rate, the counter reliably processes input clocks up to that frequency; above 8 MHz the internal propagation delays may cause missed edges or metastable outputs, so the system clock must be derated accordingly.
Asynchronous reset and dual-edge trigger for safety-critical state control
The asynchronous reset clears the counter output immediately on the reset pin assertion, independent of the clock. This is essential for forcing a known state during power-up sequencing or when a watchdog timer triggers a system reset — the counter does not wait for the next clock edge to clear. Both positive and negative edge trigger types are supported, allowing the counter to be clocked from either the rising or falling edge of the input signal. This flexibility simplifies interfacing to mixed-logic families where the clock polarity may differ between the source and the counter.
Military temperature grade and wide supply range for harsh environments
The 16-TSSOP package with 0.173-inch body width and 0.65 mm pitch demands a controlled reflow profile and may require a 4-layer PCB for fan-out of the fine-pitch leads.
