The CD4072BPW is a Texas Instruments 4000B-series CMOS dual 4-input OR gate. Supply voltage spans 3V to 18V, making it compatible with both 5V and 12V logic rails common in hobbyist and industrial mixed-voltage designs.
Quiescent current and propagation delay — what they mean on the bench
This is the 4000B family's hallmark: static power is negligible, and the trade-off is speed. Max propagation delay is 90 ns at 15V supply into a 50 pF load. That's the time the output takes to respond after an input changes — fast enough for human-interface logic, slow panel switches, or debounce circuits, but not for a 10 MHz clock tree. For a weekend robot or a control panel interlock, it's plenty. Output drive capability is 3.4 mA for both high and low states — enough to light a standard LED through a current-limiting resistor or drive the input of another CMOS gate, but not enough to switch a relay coil directly. A transistor or MOSFET driver sits between this gate and any inductive load.
The tube packaging (: Tube) means it ships in anti-static tubes, not tape-and-reel — fine for bench builds but worth noting if you're feeding a pick-and-place machine that expects reels.
