Dual-supply operation — what it means for analog signal range
The CD4066BM96 is specified for dual-supply operation, meaning the switch can pass signals that swing above and below the common reference — useful for bipolar analog signals. With a 3V to 18V total rail span, the on-resistance and signal-handling symmetry are maintained across the full voltage range. For single-supply designs, simply tie the negative rail to ground; the switch still works, but the analog signal must stay within the supply rails. The 4000B series does not include the built-in overvoltage protection found on newer analog switches, so input voltage should not exceed VDD or go below VSS.
