PLL core with wide supply flexibility
The CD4046BE is a phase-locked loop (PLL) IC from Texas Instruments, built on a CMOS process for low power consumption. Its 2.4 MHz maximum frequency sets the upper bound for the VCO and phase-detector operation — useful for frequency synthesis, FM demodulation, or tone decoding up to that speed. The 3V to 18V supply range means this PLL can run directly off a 5V logic rail, a 12V industrial bus, or a 9V battery without an intermediate regulator. That flexibility simplifies power-tree design in mixed-voltage systems.
The through-hole 16-DIP package (16-PDIP) is socket-friendly and tolerates manual rework or field replacement without hot-air equipment. Single-circuit PLL with a 1:1 input-to-output ratio and no differential I/O — the phase detector and VCO are internally connected, so external loop-filter components determine the capture and lock range.
For new designs, the wide supply range and military temp grade make it a strong candidate where a simple, proven PLL architecture is preferred over a more complex digital synthesis solution.
