BCD-to-decimal decode in a wide-VDD logic family
The CD4028BM96 is a BCD-to-decimal decoder from TI's 4000B series, converting a 4-bit BCD input into one-of-ten active-high outputs. The 1 x 4:10 circuit means a single decoder stage handles the full decode — no cascading needed for a 1-of-10 output. Supply voltage spans 3V to 18V, making it compatible with both 5V TTL-era rails and higher-voltage industrial logic up to 15V or 18V. The single-supply architecture simplifies the power tree — no split rails.
Output drive and bench limits
Each output can source or sink 6.8 mA (both high and low), which is typical for the 4000B family. This drives CMOS logic inputs directly but needs a buffer for LED indicators or relay coils — the 6.8 mA ceiling is the absolute limit per pin, not a continuous rating. The supplier device package is also 16-SOIC, so no footprint mismatch between the generic and TI-specific package codes.
