BQ294708DSGT — single-function over-voltage protector for 2–4 cell Li-Ion packs
The Texas Instruments BQ294708DSGT is a dedicated battery protection IC designed to monitor and protect 2 to 4 series-connected Lithium-Ion cells against over-voltage conditions. It is a single-function protector — its fault detection is limited to over-voltage only, with no on-chip overcurrent, short-circuit, or over-temperature protection. That means the external BOM must handle those additional protection layers. The device operates across an industrial temperature range of -40°C to 110°C, making it suitable for power tools, e-bikes, portable medical equipment, and outdoor battery backup systems where the pack sees ambient extremes but not the under-hood thermal profile of automotive.
Package and mounting — 2x2 mm WSON with exposed pad
The supplier device package is 8-WSON measuring 2x2 mm. Surface-mount assembly only; no through-hole variant exists. Tape & Reel or Cut Tape options cover prototype through production volumes.
Lifecycle and compliance — active, no obsolescence concern
It is ROHS3 compliant.
What the ratings mean for the BOM
The 2 to 4 cell count rating sets the voltage threshold window: the IC monitors each series cell and triggers a fault when any cell exceeds the over-voltage threshold. The -40°C to 110°C operating range covers industrial and outdoor battery packs but stops short of the 125°C automotive under-hood requirement — if the pack sits near an engine or exhaust path, step up to an AEC-Q100 grade part like the BQ79612PAPRQ1. The 8-WSON (2x2 mm) footprint is small enough for cylindrical cell holders and pouch-pack PCBs, but the exposed pad layout consumes board area for the thermal via pattern.
