Over-voltage protection — what it covers and what it doesn't
The BQ29412DCTR is a single-function protector: it monitors each cell in a 2-4 series stack and asserts a fault signal if any cell voltage exceeds the factory-set over-voltage threshold. There is no programmable threshold, no current-sense input, and no temperature monitoring. That means the BOM needs a separate charge/discharge FET controller and thermistor circuit for full pack protection. The advantage is simplicity — a fixed-threshold watchdog that does not need firmware or configuration, useful for cost-sensitive or space-constrained designs where a full fuel-gauge/protector IC would be overkill.
Temperature range and environment
Rated from -40°C to 110°C, the BQ29412DCTR covers the industrial temperature band and extends into the lower end of automotive cabin applications. It is not AEC-Q100 qualified (the BQ79612PAPRQ1 is the automotive-grade functional-safety sibling), so for under-hood or mission-critical automotive use, that peer is the correct choice. For consumer, portable, and industrial packs, this temperature grade is sufficient and the part is actively available.
Active lifecycle — no LTB pressure
The BQ29412DCTR is listed as Active and ROHS3 compliant. For a BOM freeze or a new design, this part carries no lifecycle risk.
