Product details

Single-cell fuel gauge with Impedance Track

The BQ27Z561YPHR is a Texas Instruments single-cell lithium-ion/polymer battery fuel gauge that uses the Impedance Track™ algorithm to report state-of-charge, remaining capacity, and time-to-empty over an I²C or HDQ serial bus. The 12-DSBGA package (1.68x2.05 mm) keeps the footprint small, but the 0.5 mm ball pitch on this wafer-level package means the board must be clean and the reflow profile tight — moisture sensitivity level is something to confirm before opening the reel.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BQ27Z561YPHR a direct replacement for the BQ27441?

Both are single-cell Li-ion fuel gauges from Texas Instruments, but the BQ27Z561 uses the Impedance Track™ algorithm while the BQ27441 uses a simpler voltage-based algorithm. The BQ27Z561 also supports the HDQ interface in addition to I²C, and comes in a smaller 12-DSBGA package versus the BQ27441's 12-SON. They are not pin-compatible — a board spin is needed.

What is the I²C address of the BQ27Z561YPHR?

The default I²C address is 0x55 (7-bit) for the BQ27Z561 family, though it can be configured via the data flash. Confirm the address in the datasheet before writing the host driver.

How does Impedance Track work in the BQ27Z561?

Impedance Track learns the battery's impedance and open-circuit voltage over the charge/discharge cycle, then uses that data to compute state-of-charge and remaining capacity. This gives more accurate fuel-gauging than a simple voltage look-up, especially as the battery ages and its internal resistance changes.
