Battery fuel-gauge in an 8-pin package
The BQ26231PW is a multi-chemistry battery monitor that tracks charge and discharge by counting coulombs through a sense resistor — essentially a fuel gauge for portable or backup-power packs that reports remaining capacity over the HDQ single-wire interface. The 0.65 mm pin pitch is hand-solderable with a fine tip, but the small pad size means the hot-air profile needs to stay under 260 °C peak to avoid lifting the tiny leads.
Rework and board-fit realities
The 8-TSSOP package has a central thermal pad that is not present — the die sits on the leadframe, so the main heat path is through the pins. This makes rework easier than a QFN: no underfill to worry about, and the visible leads mean you can verify each solder joint after reflow. Pin 1 is clearly marked by a molded dot on the top surface and a chamfered corner on the package body. Orientation is unambiguous under a microscope, which cuts down the risk of a rotated placement during hand-assembly rework. Operating temperature range of -20°C to 70°C covers most indoor consumer and industrial equipment but does not reach automotive under-hood requirements. If the board sits near a hot battery pack in a sealed enclosure, the 70°C ceiling may be tight.
