8-A switch-mode charger with I2C programmability
The BQ25960YBGR is a Texas Instruments switch-mode battery charger that draws up to 8 A of charge current for a single-cell lithium-ion pack, controlled over an I2C bus. The 8 A maximum charge current pushes the charging power into the range needed for fast-charging a high-capacity smartphone or tablet cell within an hour — the thermal budget in the 36-DSBGA package assumes the board copper area and airflow are designed for that current, not just the IC's own dissipation.
Protection set and programmable limits
Fault protection covers overcurrent, overtemperature, overvoltage, and reverse-current conditions — the reverse-current block keeps the battery from back-driving the input when the adapter is removed, which is the same function a separate ideal-diode controller would handle. The I2C interface gives the system host control over charge current and timer settings, so the charging profile can be adjusted in firmware without a resistor change.
