Single-cell Li-Ion/Polymer charger with I²C and USB interface
The Texas Instruments BQ25890RTWT is a MaxCharge™ single-cell Li-Ion/Polymer battery charger IC in a 24-WQFN package. It handles a single cell and delivers up to 5 A charge current from a supply voltage up to 14 V.
5 A charge current — thermal and layout considerations
The 5 A max charge current is the headline rating that drives the charging speed. The I²C interface allows the host to program the charge current, termination voltage, and input current limit, so the same PCB can support different battery chemistries and capacities without a hardware change.
Fault protection and interface
Built-in over-current and over-temperature protection reduce the need for external supervisory circuits. The USB interface supports direct connection to a USB VBUS line; the I²C bus gives the system controller visibility into charge status, fault flags, and battery voltage.
