Single-cell USB charger rated for 125°C ambient
500 mA charge current — sizing the charge time
The 500 mA max charge current is the ceiling for a single-cell 4.2V Li-Ion or Li-Polymer pack. For a typical 1000 mAh cell, that is roughly a 0.5C rate — expect a full charge cycle in about 2.5 to 3 hours from a depleted state, assuming the thermal pad keeps the junction below the thermal regulation threshold. The charge current is constant and programmable, so the BOM resistor sets the rate; the 500 mA limit is the maximum, not the default.
The USB interface means the charger accepts 5V from a USB host, wall adapter, or power bank without needing a separate DC-DC converter or LDO ahead of it. The 6.5V max supply gives enough headroom for a 5V rail with tolerance, but the dropout between 5V input and 4.2V battery is only 0.8V — the linear regulator in the charger stays in regulation as long as the input stays above ~4.4V.
