Multi-chemistry charger with SMBus control
The Texas Instruments BQ24780SRUYT is a multi-chemistry battery charger IC that handles 1 to 4 series cells with a single SMBus interface for charge parameter programming and status monitoring. It integrates over-current, over-voltage, and short-circuit fault protection, and operates from a supply up to 24 V.
Cell count and chemistry flexibility
Supporting 1 to 4 series cells, this charger covers the most common battery pack configurations for portable devices — from single-cell phones and tablets to 4-cell notebook packs. The multi-chemistry capability means it works with Li-ion, Li-polymer, and other rechargeable chemistries, so a single BOM line can serve different pack types across a product family.
SMBus communication for smart charging
The SMBus interface allows the system host to set charge current, voltage, and termination thresholds dynamically, and to read back battery status. This is the standard protocol for smart batteries (Smart Battery Data Specification), so the BQ24780SRUYT integrates directly into an existing SMBus-compatible power management scheme without additional glue logic.
Protection and package
Built-in fault protection for over-current, over-voltage, and short circuit reduces external component count and simplifies safety certification. Surface-mount assembly keeps the board profile low.
