Product details

Multi-chemistry charger with 10 A ceiling

The Texas Instruments BQ24740RHDT is a multi-chemistry battery charger IC that handles 2 to 4 series cells with a programmable constant-current charge up to 10 A max. It accepts a supply voltage up to 24 V and supports a maximum battery pack voltage of 18 V.

10 A charge current — sizing the power stage

The 10 A max charge current sets the floor for the external MOSFETs, inductor, and input capacitor. At 10 A continuous, the power dissipation in the pass FET and sense resistor drives the thermal design — the 28-VFQFN exposed pad needs a solid copper pour and vias to the ground plane to keep junction temperature below 125°C. The constant-current programming loop lets the system set the charge rate via an external resistor or DAC, so the same BOM can cover different battery capacities by adjusting the current setpoint.

The BQ24740RHDT is listed as obsolete by Texas Instruments.
