Multi-chemistry charger with I²C control
The BQ24735RGRR is a multi-chemistry battery charger IC from Texas Instruments that handles 1 to 4 series cells with a maximum pack voltage of 16.8V. The I²C interface lets the system host set charge current, voltage thresholds, and termination parameters on the fly, which is useful when the same board must support Li-ion, Li-polymer, or LiFePO4 chemistries without hardware changes.
Fault protection and supply range
On-chip fault protection covers over-current, over-voltage, and short-circuit conditions — three failure modes that typically require external comparators or a supervisor IC. The maximum supply voltage is 24V, which gives headroom for a 19V adapter or a 24V industrial rail while still protecting the downstream battery. Because the charger is multi-chemistry, it does not hard-code a termination voltage for a specific cell type. The I²C registers hold the target voltage; the host firmware writes the correct value for the installed pack. This is the same approach used in many notebook and tablet designs where the battery type is not known until the pack is inserted.
