Multi-chemistry charger with I²C control for 3–4 cell packs
The Texas Instruments BQ24721CRHBTG4 is a multi-chemistry battery charger IC designed for 3-4 series cells, supporting Li-ion, Li-Po, and other chemistries. It communicates over an I²C interface, allowing the host microcontroller to set charge current, voltage thresholds, and monitor status. The part integrates overcurrent fault protection, reducing external sense circuitry.
Charge voltage ceiling and supply headroom
The maximum battery pack voltage is 19.2V, which covers 4-series Li-ion (nominal 14.8V, full charge 16.8V) and 3-series (nominal 11.1V, full charge 12.6V) with margin. The charger accepts a supply voltage up to 24V, so a standard 19V laptop adapter or a 20V USB-C PD source provides adequate headroom for regulation.
