Multi-chemistry charger with digital current control
The Texas Instruments BQ24721CRHBT is a multi-chemistry battery charger IC designed for 3- to 4-cell series packs, with a maximum battery pack voltage of 19.2V. It integrates an I²C interface for host-controlled charge current programming, eliminating external resistor dividers and enabling adaptive charging profiles for Li-ion, Li-polymer, or other chemistries.
Supply rail and pack voltage limits
Maximum supply voltage is 24V, which accommodates common AC adapter outputs (19V–20V) with margin for transient events. The 19.2V max battery pack voltage matches a 4-series Li-ion cell stack at full charge (4.2V/cell × 4 = 16.8V) plus a small overhead for the charger's regulation setpoint. With 3-4 cell support, this part fits the majority of notebook and portable instrument battery configurations. The I²C interface allows the system host to read back charge status and adjust current in real time, useful for thermal throttling or input-current limiting when the adapter is shared.
