What this charger does for the BOM
The Texas Instruments BQ24707ARGRT is a Li-Ion battery charger IC that handles 1 to 4 series cells with a programmable constant-current charge profile. It talks to the system host over an I²C interface, so charge voltage, current, and termination thresholds are set in firmware rather than with external resistor dividers. That saves board space and lets a single design cover multiple battery configurations by changing a few register values. Built-in fault protection covers over-current, over-voltage, and short-circuit conditions. That means fewer external supervisory components and a simpler layout for the power path.
Because charge parameters are set over I²C, the BQ24707ARGRT fits designs where the system microcontroller already manages the battery. The host reads the charger's status registers and adjusts the charge current on the fly — useful for thermal throttling or when the input adapter is current-limited. No potentiometers, no resistor swaps during prototyping.
