10A charge current, 1-6 cell Li-ion charger in a 4x4 QFN
The BQ24618RGER is a Texas Instruments switch-mode battery charge controller for lithium-ion or lithium-polymer packs, delivering a programmable charge current up to 10 A across 1 to 6 series cells. It operates from a supply rail up to 28 V and handles battery pack voltages to 26 V max, covering common 2S through 6S Li-ion configurations used in power tools, portable instruments, and backup systems. The 24-VQFN (4x4 mm) package with an exposed thermal pad requires a PCB copper pour on the bottom layer to sink the heat from a 10 A charge cycle, particularly at elevated ambient temperatures up to 85 °C.
Built-in fault protections and programmable charge profile
Integrated fault protection covers overcurrent, overtemperature, overvoltage, and short-circuit conditions, eliminating the need for an external supervisor IC on the charge path. The charge current and charge timer are programmable via external resistors and capacitors, giving the designer control over the CC-CV profile without I²C or SMBus firmware. The constant-current charging mode is programmable, so the 10 A max ceiling can be set lower to match the cell capacity and thermal budget of the enclosure.
