Multi-chemistry charge controller — one IC for lead-acid, Li-ion, NiMH
The BQ24400PWR handles Multi-Chemistry battery types, meaning a single charge-control IC on the board can be configured for lead-acid, Li-ion, or NiMH packs by setting the external resistor divider. This reduces BOM line count when a product ships with multiple battery options. Programmable features include a Timer and Voltage threshold — the charge termination is set by external components, not fixed internally, so the same PCB layout serves different cell counts and chemistries by changing a few passives. Supply voltage max is 6V, which limits the input rail to a single-cell Li-ion (4.2V full charge) or a 5V USB bus. For higher-voltage packs (e.g., 12V lead-acid), an external step-down regulator is needed ahead of this IC.
Temperature grade and package — commercial ambient, small footprint
Operating temperature range is -20°C to 70°C, covering commercial and most industrial ambient environments but not automotive under-hood or extended outdoor exposure. The 8-TSSOP package with 0.65mm pitch fits into compact charger designs where board space is tight. Surface-mount assembly with Tape & Reel packaging — standard for volume pick-and-place. The 8-TSSOP body is 3.0mm × 4.4mm, so the decoupling cap and resistor divider fit within a 10mm × 10mm layout area.
