Li-ion protection IC with full fault coverage
The Texas Instruments BQ24382DSGT is a dedicated Li-ion battery protection IC that monitors and protects a single-cell pack against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, and short-circuit conditions. It integrates the protection FETs and sense resistor internally, so the external BOM stays minimal — useful when board area is tight and the protection decision needs to be self-contained rather than delegated to a gauge or fuel-gauge companion. The 8-WSON (2x2 mm) package fits into the edge of a battery pack PCB or a handheld device's power management section.
No last-time-buy window has been announced, and no successor has been designated. For a protection IC that is often qualified into a battery pack assembly with a multi-year product life, active status removes one sourcing risk variable. The part is ROHS3 compliant.
What the protection set means for the BOM
The fault protection block covers overcurrent, overtemperature, overvoltage, undervoltage, and short circuit — five conditions in one IC. That is the full set a single-cell Li-ion pack needs per the typical safety guidelines, without adding a separate overvoltage protector or a PTC fuse. The internal FETs handle the disconnect, so the series-pass element is already on-chip. The designer only needs to size the input capacitor and ensure the PCB trace width supports the pack's discharge current.
