Li-Ion battery protection with four-way fault coverage
The Texas Instruments BQ24381DSGR is a dedicated battery protection IC for single-cell Lithium Ion packs, integrating protection against over-current, over-temperature, over/under-voltage, and short-circuit faults.
The protection set covers the four failure modes that dominate Li-Ion cell damage: over-current from a load short or charger fault, over-temperature from excessive charge/discharge current, over-voltage from a failed charger regulator, and under-voltage from deep discharge that can trigger cell instability on recharge. The IC monitors the battery voltage and current continuously; when a fault exceeds the internal threshold, the output driver opens the series pass element (typically an N-channel MOSFET) to isolate the cell.
Package and board integration
Housed in an 8-WSON package with a 2x2 mm body (supplier device package 8-WSON), the BQ24381DSGR occupies minimal PCB area, which matters for space-constrained designs like TWS earbuds, wearable health monitors, or compact IoT sensors.
