Li-ion battery protection in a compact WSON package
The Texas Instruments BQ24304DSGR is a dedicated battery protection IC for single-cell Lithium Ion packs, integrating over-current, over-temperature, and over/under-voltage fault monitoring into an 8-WSON (2x2) package. The 8-WFDFN exposed pad provides a low-thermal-resistance path to the PCB ground plane, which is essential for dissipating heat during sustained over-current events.
Fault protection set and operating envelope
The protection suite covers the three failure modes that dominate Li-ion cell damage: over-current from a shorted load, over-temperature from a runaway charge, and over/under-voltage from a failed charger or excessive discharge. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 125°C junction, which suits consumer and industrial portable equipment but excludes the -40°C cold-start requirement for automotive or outdoor battery packs.
