Single-cell Li-ion charger — the 2.5 A current ceiling
The BQ24278YFFR from Texas Instruments is a single-cell Li-ion battery charger with a maximum charge current of 2.5 A, programmable via external resistor. It accepts a supply input up to 10 V, covering USB and basic adapter sources. The 2.5 A ceiling sets the charge-time floor for a 1-cell pack — a 2000 mAh cell charges at roughly C/0.8, which keeps the thermal rise manageable in the 49-DSBGA package.
Protection suite: over-temp, over-voltage, short-circuit
Integrated fault protection covers over-temperature, over-voltage, and short-circuit conditions — no external supervisor needed for these failure modes.
Package and mounting — 49-DSBGA, 2.8 x 2.8 mm
Housed in a 49-bump DSBGA (2.8 x 2.8 mm) package, surface-mount only. The small footprint fits space-constrained designs, but the 0.4 mm pitch demands careful PCB layout and a controlled solder process.
