Single-cell Li-Ion charger with I²C programmability
The Texas Instruments BQ24270YFFT is a single-cell Li-Ion battery charger with an I²C interface for programmable charge current up to 1.5 A. It targets portable devices where the system microcontroller needs to adjust the charge profile based on input current limit, battery temperature, or system load — common in smartphones, tablets, and handheld instruments.
1.5 A charge current and fault protection
The maximum charge current of 1.5 A sets the charge-time floor for a given battery capacity — a 3000 mAh pack charges in roughly two hours at this rate, assuming the input supply can sustain the power. The charge current is constant and programmable via I²C, so the firmware can reduce the rate when the system is thermally constrained or running on a weak USB source. Integrated fault protection covers over-temperature, over-voltage, and short-circuit conditions. That means the charger can run without a separate protection IC in many designs, saving board area and BOM cost.
DSBGA package — PCB layout considerations
The 49-DSBGA package measures 2.8x2.8 mm with a 0.4 mm ball pitch typical for this class. Surface-mount assembly requires a solder-paste stencil matched to the ball diameter and a reflow profile that avoids cold joints on the centre thermal pad. Not a hand-solder part — plan for a pick-and-place pass and X-ray inspection on the first build.
