4A programmable charge current — what it buys the BOM
The BQ24170RGYT from Texas Instruments is a standalone Li-Ion/Polymer charger IC that delivers up to 4A programmable charge current to 1-3 series cells.
Supply headroom and input protection
The 17V max supply gives the part headroom to run from a 12V or 15V adapter while still regulating the charge voltage to 4.2V per cell. It also absorbs the input ripple from a noisy automotive rail or a flyback supply without needing a pre-regulator. The integrated fault protection — overcurrent, overtemperature, and overvoltage — shuts down the charge cycle before the silicon or the battery sees stress, so the designer can skip the discrete protection clamp on the input.
Temperature grade and package — deployment fit
Surface-mount only; the Tape & Reel option suits automated pick-and-place for volume builds.
